Travel Agent: How to Select
A good travel agent can save you time, money and anxiety. But how do you decide which travel agent is right for you? Remember that although the vast majority in this field are persons of proven knowledge, experience and financial responsibility, anyone, regardless of background and integrity, can hold themselves out as a travel agent because there are no licensing requirements in most states.

Travel agents only rarely require a fee from their individual customers because they are usually paid by hotel and transportation companies for reservations made and tickets issued. Before appointing an agent to handle and issue tickets, transportation companies investigate the agent's background and financial responsibility. You may want to check beforehand that an agent you plan to select has been appointed by at least two transportation companies.

Trade organizations such as the American Society of Travel Agents also look into the background of their members. Thus, current membership with a group would also indicate an agent with which you might wish to do business.

As travelers' needs become more specialized, so have travel agencies themselves. It is always a good idea to look for an agent which offers the type of travel you're interested in, whether it be individual travel for vacation or pleasure, local or specialized tours, commercial business, charter or group tours, business travel, and so on.

Recommendations and referrals from friends or from former clients of the agency can be especially helpful in this regard - in determining the extent to which the agency will be able to meet your individual needs and has particular skills necessary to be of the most help.
