Industry Tips

To protect yourself while cybershopping, the Better Business Bureau recommends the following tips:

* THINK SECURITY. Your computer is connected through telephone wires to the Internet. Information sent over the Internet can be intercepted. Consider using secure online service providers which encrypt or scramble purchase information and transactions. Secure sites display a lock indicating your personal information is protected. Look for information on the company's privacy and security policy.

* INVESTIGATE BEFORE YOU INVEST. When you shop with a new business on the Internet, check its reliability report with the BBB. Company reliability reports can be found on the Internet at our web site listing businesses in central and eastern Kentucky, www.ky.bbb.org, or the national BBB web site, www.bbb.org. Reliability reports will tell you the length of time in business, the name of the principal officer, its complaint history as well as membership status in the Bureau. Also ask the company for a catalog or brochure to be mailed to you; that way you can take time to study the products and services offered, and make sure you are making a wise investment. Look for the BBBOnLine logo indicating the company is a member of the Better Business Bureau. Click on the logo to confirm the company's membership status.

* USE THE UNIFORM RESOURCE LOCATOR (URL). The URL allows you to check the address of the company's web site and ensures that you are dealing with the right company. Use one of the various sites such as www.BetterWhoIs.com and www.WhoIs.com which provide information about the registrar of the URL.

* STICK TO WHAT YOU KNOW. Make sure that you understand the company's refund and return policies. Make note of the time required to process and ship your order. The product or service offered by a particular web company maybe just what you need, but if you can't return it or if it takes two months to receive, is the offer as good as you originally thought it to be? Always, print out a copy of the confirmation number or any other documentation of the transaction for your records.

* RED FLAGS. Look for information about the company on the web site. This information should include the company's name, address, phone numbers and fax numbers. Often there is a history of the company and information on the principal officers and the various ways to contact the firm. If this information is not available, think twice before doing business.

If you are asked for your bank account/credit card number or social security number in order to conduct a transaction, then a red flag should wave. Con artists who have used every other type of media for fraudulent activity are now turning online to obtain this type of information and then use it to make unauthorized debits to your accounts.

As a matter of policy, the BBB does not endorse any product, service or business.

BBB Reliability Reports are provided solely to assist you in exercising your own best judgment. Information in this BBB Reliability Report is believed reliable, but not guaranteed as to accuracy.

BBB Reliability Reports generally cover a three-year reporting period. BBB Reliability Reports are subject to change at any time.

If you choose to do business with this business, please let the business know that you contacted the BBB for a BBB Reliability Report.
